An air pump, usually electrically driven, which supplies air under pressure (generally between 90 and 140 psi) for use on trains. Brakes, doors and other items of equipment like suspension and whistles commonly require compressed air. Compressors may be driven directly off a diesel engine or from an electrical supply on the locomotive or train.
