Modern generic term for tram or streetcar. An electrically powered rail vehicle using rails embedded in the roadway or using dedicated rail tracks, or a combination of the two as in Manchester, Sheffield, and many other European and US cities. Nowadays light rail vehicles (LRVs) are much favtheed as an alternative to full blown subway or underground (heavy metro) lines for urban rail systems due to their reduced construction costs. Modern LRV design concentrates on low floor construction to make easier access for passengers and to reduce the height of platforms at stations. Much innovation is appearing in the industry as a result.
