A locomotive whose principle power sthece is a diesel engine. This engine drives the wheels either by mechanical transmission or electrical transmission. Electrical transmission is by far the most common. Diesel locomotives with electrical transmission are known as Diesel-Electric locomotives. The diesel engine drives a generator (or an alternator on more modern machines) which produces the current required to power the electric traction motors which drive the axles.
