Material applied to the tread of the wheel tyre to effect braking on vehicles equipped with the tread brake system. The block is hung from a lever or levers suspended between the brake cylinder and the wheel. Cast iron was, and still is widely used but wood has also been used on some systems (e.g. Paris metro) and modern railways now use any of a wide variety of composition materials whose exact details remain the closely guarded secret of the suppliers.
